Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695-1764)

Italian composer and violin virtuoso. Played violin as a boy at S. Maria Maggiore, Bergamo; received leave in 1611 to travel to Rome, where he perhaps studied with Valentini (though probably not with Corelli). Locatelli appeared often at S. Lorenzo in Damaso between 1717 and 1723; named virtuoso da cameraat Mantua in 1725, but freely pursued other engagements, including performances at Venice (1725), Bavaria (1727), and Berlin and Kassel (1728), appearing with Leclair in Kassel. Moved to Amsterdam in 1729, where he lived for the rest of his life, leading a group of amateur musicians and teaching. He released in 1721 a corrected version of his concerti grossi in 1729; two years later he received a 15-year exclusive privilege for the printing of his music in the Netherlands, renewing it in 1747; from 1741 he sold imported Italian violin strings as well. Though his playing was highly praised, some observers found it too brilliant; likewise, the originality of his works was admired, while others criticized a lack of technique and invention. As a composer he focused on the sonata and concerto, achieving a fusion of sorts between the Roman and Venetian styles; his caprices for solo violin in L'arte del violino(Amsterdam, 1733) at one time earned him the title "Paganini of the 18th century." An extensive art collection, along with a library featuring books on history, philosophy, and science in addition to music, testify to his breadth of learning.

Fabio Biondi

Born in Palermo, Fabio Biondi began his international career at the age of twelve, performing his first solo concert with the RAI symphony orchestra. Driven early on by an inexhaustible cultural curiosity, Fabio Biondi was introduced to pioneers of the new approach to baroque music, an opportunity that was to expand his musical vision and change the direction of his career.

At the age of sixteen Biondi was invited by the Musikverein of Vienna to perform Bach's violin concertos. Since then, he has performed with various ensembles including Cappella Real, Musica Antiqua Wien, Seminario Musicale, La Chapelle Royale, and Les Musiciens du Louvre, specializing in the performance of baroque music using original technique and instruments.

In 1990 Biondi founded Europa Galante, which has become the most internationally renowned and awarded Italian ensemble of baroque music due to its worldwide concert schedule and recording success. Since 2005 Biondi has also taken on the role of artistic director for baroque music of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.

Throughout his career, Biondi has collaborated as soloist and conductor with such orchestras as Santa Cecilia in Rome,Rotterdam Chamber Orchestra, European Baroque Orchestra, Opera of Halle, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Norway, Orchestre Nationale of Montpellier, and Mahler Chamber Orchestra, among others.

Biondi plays a 1690 Gofredo Cappa Violon. He also plays a 1766 Carlo Ferdinando Gagliano Violin, owned by his teacher Salvatore Cicero and kindly lent to him by the Salvatore Cicero Foundation in Palermo.
