Gabrieli's music, though internationally performed, always conjures his home of Venice. Listening to this excellent collection of works transports the listener to that most beautiful of cities, La Serenissima! Highly recommended.

Stephen Cleobury conducts the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, with Richard Farnes and Stephen Layton as organists and soloists Charles Brett (counter tenor), William Kendall and Peter Hall (tenors) and Ian Caddy (bass) in a selection of works by Giovanni Gabrieli in the wonderfully resonant acoustic of the King's College Chapel. The included works are 'Quem vidistis pastores?', 'Canzones IV a 6', XII a 8, and per sonar a 4', 'O Jesu mi dulcissime', 'Jubilate Deo', 'In ecclesiis', 'Timor et Tremor', and 'O magnum mysterium'. Cleobury mixes the works for brass alone with the antiphonal works with chorus and soloists. The music is haunting and sonorous and exquisitely balanced.--Amazon
