Review:
Jean-Marie Leclair was one of the great virtuosos of the violin in the history of music. He had a high reputation and travelled through Europe as a performer. Born at a time when the Italian style was fully established in France, he was one of the representatives of the ideal of the goûts réunis, the mixture of French and Italian elements. The Teldec series Das Alte Werk was in the forefront of the period revolution and reflects the pioneering work of many of its stars. The conversion of Jaap Schröder’s Concerto Amsterdam from a modern-instrument ensemble in 1969, to a period band in 1978, partnering the excellent Schröder himself in violin concertos by Leclair is witnessed on this disc. In particular lovers of music for violin will enjoy these performances. The wonderful concerto for recorder and two violins by Naudot recorded by Frans Bruggen is also included. |
