Bach JS - Cantatas Vol. 48, BWV 34, 117, 98, 120 - Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan

Review:

I strongly suggest you sample the cantata recordings of Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan. I must admit that I find Suzuki's cantata recordings very convincing. His recordings are, in my opinion (and I have every volume), invariably good. Suzuki always carefully considers the text of each cantata so that every movement communicates meaning rather than just sounding beautiful. Clear, lovely choral singing, a ravishing period-instrument ensemble (afforded a bit of depth and richness by a slightly reverberant acoustic), and sensitive, intelligent vocal soloists add An early printing of Luther's hymn A Mighty Fortress is Our God (Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott)much to the value of his volumes. Moving very slowly through the cantatas series, thoroughly researching and rehearsing the works, I have found the Suzuki series outstanding for musicianship, orchestral support, recorded sound, and conducting.
