Pachelbel Canon - Holloway, Ritchie, Manze
Baroque | Eac, flac, cue | log, cover | 1 CD, 293 MB

This is simply a wonderful recording of violin music. Holloway, Ritchie and Manze are among the best Baroque players in the world and so getting to hear them all together is quite a treat. Most of the composers are fairly obscure but the music is of high quality and the performances are full of life and color. As was the style then, ornaments and flourishes are often added by the performers.
My favorite pieces include the beautiful "Three Parts Upon a Ground" by Purcell with it's luxurious sonorities and flights of fancy, as well as the Marini Echo Sonata and the very appealing Sonata for three violins by Schmelzer. You also get to hear the famous (or infamous) Pachelbel Cannon in a wonderfully fresh performance, stripped of the laborious, pompous pedantry with which modern performers often approach it. Rather than a slow, "wedding procession" we get a gracious, dance-like and, yes, even virtuoso performance which also includes the energetic Gigue which is supposed to immediatly follow the Canon.
